SO I LIED GET OVER IT

I said last time I wouldn't post any OF myself for a while but I got an email from an old friend CONTAINING A VINTAGE FUCKING POPTPOP OF YOURS TRULY AND HERS TRULY.

This was sent in by my old school buddy Liz and its a new category of POPtPOP'in. I briefly proposed the name INIFINIPOP™ but I think we'd need another mirror in the shot. So this one is SORT of a Versus™, but its also of herself. Self-vs-self, in a way.

I think the new term is MetaPop™! MEEEEETTAAAAPOP (i say mehta-pop, but you can say meatah-pop if you WANT TO)

Here is what Liz had to say about the image:

So I was going through photographs the other day while cleaning out the office and I found (this) (... below, obviously). And I remembered your thing about pictures of people taking...... so I wondered...
Does it count if it's self-reflective? ( and does it count if you are in the picture?) (and if it is self-reflective-as in literally- does that make it an infinite poptpop?)
Anyway, this was a classic. Love the shirts.

And I have to say: This was at a hotel in Birmingham when she came to see me (from knoxville) when I was in college. The shirt I am wearing is from the Sturgis bike rally my dad took me to in 1998, though neither of us really rode at that point.

I ALSO have to say: i promise, the next poptop is AWESOME. in fact, IT IS MY FAVORITE OF ALL OF TIME.

Brace yourself, grab some Depends®, and hold on.

ps POLTAPOLAM!

pps yes thats really me.

TAKAYAMA IN YOUR FACE OH MY GOD JAPANESE POPTPOP!

Get ready for more JApoptPANs. they're here. they're mushi mushi. get used to it.

ill LEAD OFF with the odd ball. its the odd ball because its in Tokyo and THERE IS A HUGE FRIGGEN sort of BALL looking THING. Notice the classic mushi mushi they have going on there. also note that i took a few of these, from long range, and eventually a man who i think was with the group eventually stepped in between myself and the girls. POPTPOP IS NOW STALKING JAPANESE SCHOOL GIRLS. really, though, that was bound too happen. i salute your sir for taking passive action against american perverts with cameras who are about 50 feet away. (nerd note: you can see the top of the mans head on the far left under the yellow sign thing. its literally just his hair)

NOW ON TO THE TAKAYAMA GOODNESS.

holy crap takayama is great. super pretty. an amazing ride to get there. sort of touristy. what does all that mean? good times, great oldies views, and touristy pOpTpOps galore.

First up is one to give a tiny sense of the setting. down on a river bank.

Next, MORE HOT RIVER ACTION. this is a woman LONG RANGE poptpopping a stranger who was spying on a crane in the river (with a mediocre lens and flash strapped to his camera. whaa?). i zoomed in on the crane FOR EVIDENCE.

Next is another classic MushPoptMushi.

And finally one from more in the city of Takayama. the dude shooting is shooting a rangefinder 6x7, btw.

thats ALL FOR NOW. tons more on film. enjoy.

any thoughts or requests?

POPTPreview

ALRIGHT!

Here is a PopTpoP from yesterday. REALLY this is a sort of preview-but-its-still-itself-technically-a-poptpop, but thats sort of a mouthful.

I'll post two shots of Bryan during our shoot (well, his, but I shot part of it too) for Portico Magazine.

They are "previews" because they are shot on my phone and are hardly high quality. But also I shot various frames of film during the shoot too.

SO LOOK OUT WORLD. IT'S COMING!

And yes the second photo is clearly the least flattering poptpop yet. Perhaps an award for bryan.

DANGEROUS! OVERLOOK! DOUBLE POPTPOP!

Remember this text?

Mentone, Ala. is the home of Alabama's only ski slope. There's also the show-stopping Desoto Falls not too far away. The fruit there is ripe for the picking, as I got a double (see the second person behind the tree) and a PoptVop (Pictures of people taking Videos of people), a near cousin. This could also be known as a Multimedia Poptpop or a PoptMpop (Pictures of people taking Motion pictures of people).

Here's the payoff.

SQUAT STANCE! ACTIVATE!

ROB CULPEPPER DAY TWO! Above, a Glorious, glorious Squat Stance. Below is Rob's description of just wtf a squat stance is.

My personal favorite part is the dude in the red shrit.

Squat Stance: One time Caleb and I were at a wedding and he made fun of my squat stance. That is, the posture my body makes when I need to get lower to shoot someone at the waist and keep the perspective right. Everyone has a squat stance and once you're aware of them, it's hilarious to watch photographers make pictures because you're aware of how funny they look. They, of course, are doing what seems natural and therefore have no idea how dumb they look. On a walk to Speakeasy one evening after work, we passed this photographer (and body guard in red) shooting a couple. Check out that Squat Stance!

ROB CULPEPPER WEEK! ALL CULPEPPER ALL THE TIME ALL WHERES RIGHT NOW!

So here it is. A SURPRISE WEEK FULL OF ALL ROB-CULPEPPER-BRAND POPTPOPs. whats with the all caps? IT'S ROB!

We are starting off easy here...gotta ease you in a little bit.

This is Rob's photo of Caleb photographing Matthew Mayfield (this shoot). This is up on the roof of the Phoenix Building with tiny tips of Birmingham peeking over the roof ledge thing.
(poctpom)

Rob describes this as "Caleb Working: Classic PoptpopM - Poptpop (Musician)"

More tomorrow! Prepare.

Obama Rally in Chicago by Michael Hunter FEATURING A FREAKING LAMBORGHINI

Alright! Seen here is a DOUBLE POPTPOP, with bonus points for über patriotism!

I don't have much of the story here for this one, but it is apparently in Chicago and or near an Obama Rally, taken by MICHAEL HUNTER. It was sent toward the end of November of last year (sorry it has taken me so long to get to it!) so I think we are witnessing an Obamagasm shot from his victory day.

POTPTPOAGHUAAF

picture of two people taking pictures of a girl holding up an american flag

THERE IS A LAMBORGHINI IN THE BACKGROUND SUPER TINY.

crazy triple versus

So a few days ago I got a twitter barrage of twitpics from Caleb & Trevor & Corey. It is like being crammed between two mirrors. But there are three. It is like a triangle of photo nonsense.

its A looking at B looking at C looking at A looking at B, etc.

The only way to make it more crazy would be to have be A looking at BlookingatC, B looking at ClookingatA, C looking at AlookingatB. This will happen at some point.

For now...here is a tiny iPhone collage of recording studio goodness.

RETRO STYLEE POPTPOPin! HOT OLD CAMERA ACTION

HERE! NOW! Old school only poptpop'in.

Seen here is Caleb Chancey photographing (with a Rolleiflex) Alan Barton photographing (with a 4x5) Braxton Schell. And of course I am shooting them (with a Lomo) photographing. I was shooting the newest camera and it was designed around when I was born.

RETRO. STYLEE!

so this is kind of a double poptpop, it its also sort of a PoptpoptpoP.

Oh yeah...See also THE PHOTO ALAN TOOK OF BRAXTON as well as THE PHOTO CALEB TOOK OF ALAN SHOOTING BRAXTON

ALAN + T4 == VANDAL * CALEB / POP {t} pop

On a day like today! Not long ago!

I took photographs of Caleb + Vandal to celebrate them being all engaged and what not.

ALL AT ONCE WE WERE ATTACKED BY A RABID ALAN BARTON, infected with the T4 virus.

I took this photo as I fled the scene.

The illusive IMAGINARY VERSUS poptpop

So what you see here, ladies and gentlemen!, is the illusive African Imaginary PoptpoP. Seen in the while in Uganda, this kid is mimicking me taking his photo. I have no idea what he is holding but its not a camera. Another example how kids' imaginations are the best thing since torn bread.

Here is a detail of Imaginary Versus Kid (IVK):

Don't forget to send in your shots! I'm working on new stuff with the great news of that being that I am working in conjunction with The Inkling Network's Jamie and Tammy Harper to create a really freaking weird world. The magical world of Poptpop. I don't know when it will all be ready, but I have the highest of hopes. When it is all done there will be a place for you all to upload your images so you can do everything from one place!

Cheers for now

GO TAKE SOME FREAKING POPTPOPS AND SEND THEM TO ME OH MY GOD POPTPOPTPOPTPOPTPOP

the eye of sauron belgrade

So.....

one of my goals with PoptpoP (yes, there are goals, apparently (said like dr zoidberg)) is to fully delve into the whole idea of a poptpop. its not just photographs of people taking photographs that so fascinates me. its the whole process. the awkward looking at the back of the camera (thank YOU technology), the scooting people around in the frame, the SUPER intense postures people take to frame the shot just right, its the chimping the photo after, the re-shoots, and in THIS case, the "oh shit, Alexandra, I totally fucking nailed that posed next to fucking Saurons eye. Do you still have that palantír in your purse?" look of satisfaction right AFTER a POPTPOP.

this is in belgrade, serbia (written "beograd" at the bottom of sauron's ...er..iris)

who doesn't love a botanical garden? its a great place for a photo

who doesn't love a botanical garden? its a great place for a photo. its practically a fact. you can take blurry photos of flowers. you can take pictures of different....things that are...growing. you can take bad portraits of friends costumed as faeries, kids in matching outfits, or i guess kids it matching flowers.

this is a place in monroe, la that has nickel cokes which is why we went there. NICKEL FRIGGEN COKES. in 2008. its the former home, i think, of the local area old school bottling plant duder who was the coke guy way back in the day. now this place is a museum of boring but b'god they have some cheap ass coke. in a bottle. delish.

WE HAVE A WINNER (and a runner upper!)

Okay so competition was fierce. There were blog guesses and facebook guesses.

THE RESULTS ARE IN:

the winner is the lovely TAMMY HARPER! I hereby award this part-inkling person the arbitrarily numbered bonus points!
her answer:

ah! i finally found it.

there is totally a dude squatting down in front of the stairs taking a picture of the dude with his hands in the air.

Now! That said, the multi-talented ANNA CARRIGAN answered here on poptpop TWO minutes faster than Tammy, howEVER she seemed to throw in the towel. She got the man on the stairs with his hands up but didn't find the photographer and reinforced this by ending with "i have no idea". SO CLOSE!

As a consolation prize, and because she was wonderful enough to SEND IN HER OWN POPTPOP (thank you), she gets today's post!

Background story from Anna:

in Edinburgh, Calton Hill, Lindsay Blount taking a picture of Alison in front of the National Monument aka the Parthenon aka Edinburgh's Folly because it never got finished.

The Photo:

©Lindsay Blount [or Anna Carrigan]

other notes:

since those were basically two winners, the "official" runner up is Meg "is that meg posing by the pool on portico?" Rymer McClung!

and i think we all agree the women are American. They are dirty, rotten, and from Florida or from the Midwest. It is clear they say things like "warsh" as well. You can tell by the pants.

More poptpop to come!

I think I smell another Mr Brandon on the way.

SEND ME YOUR DAMN POPTPOPs!

ps, my favorite part of anna's poptpop is the couple of people perched on monoment.
